Nutmeg

Nutmeg is one of those dogs that trust and expect the best from people no matter what happens.

She was left lying injured and helpless by the road in the heat for who knows how long while cars passed her by.

When someone did call animal control the officer didnt know what to expect as some otherwise friendly dogs can be unpredictable when in pain. But this young beagle mix wagged her tail cheerfully as if certain someone would come for her sometime. She stayed like that from the time her broken body was lifted into the truck right through all the surgeries that followed.

Since she had no I.D. she was held at a local vets to see if anyone came looking for her, Â then moved to an animal hospital for orthopedic surgery. Her pelvis had a break on the left side that could heal on its own but major damage on the right that required steel plates. Her left knee also requried surgery. During all this she became a favorite of the hospital staff. She was so happy and excited to see all her new friends it was hard to by her without paying attention.

Early on she became adept at walking on her front legs like a circus dog and could see no reason to resume four footed walking so is learning that all over again.

Nutmeg has now left the hospital and is being fostered by a rehab therapist whos doing extensive work and hydrotherapy to help her heal. How normally she will walk we don't know but I've never seen a dog more able to cope. She will eventually take that sunny disposition into a forever home and make it brighter.
